Just finished reading Hugh Kennedy's The Great Arab Conquests that intricately details the miraculous rise of the Arab empire following the emergence of Islam and the preachings of Mohammed. What made the Muslim army so successful?
*Strong, unifying, simple ideology.
*The ability of the Bedouins to travel vast distances and strong familiarity with harsh, desert climates.
* A key feature of Arab culture was that leadership was valued and earned by consensus.
*Easy terms posed to the conquered villages (convert to Islam or pay taxes).
What was not striking about the Muslim army was their size or advanced technology.
